The answer my friend is blowin’ in the wind. The answer is blowin in the wind.
This is one to sing along with. I hadn’t sung this one in many years, but after the shootings in Newtown I thought of it. The fight for gun control legislation is just beginning. And if you’re weary of having to fight these endless battles with moneyed interests, well then, get used to it. Nothin’ comes easy. Anyhow this is a swell song that Mr. Dylan wrote…..I notice when I listen to it now that I went from the first verse to the third, skipping the second altogether. But then I left the third stanza blank at the end for you to fill in the words. Now who’s on first and what’s on second?
P.S. I just recorded it again 1.2.2013 Once again I messed up the words, but it came out OK otherwise I think, especially if you sing along.
How many roads most a man walk down
Before you call him a man ?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand ?
Yes, how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they’re forever banned ?
The answer my friend is blowin’ in the wind
The answer is blowin’ in the wind.
Yes, how many years can a mountain exist
Before it’s washed to the sea ?
Yes, how many years can some people exist
Before they’re allowed to be free ?
Yes, how many times can a man turn his head
Pretending he just doesn’t see ?
The answer my friend is blowin’ in the wind
The answer is blowin’ in the wind.
Yes, how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky ?
Yes, how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry ?
Yes, how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died ?
The answer my friend is blowin’ in the wind
The answer is blowin’ in the wind.
I thought I’d introduce the song to those who had never heard it. And especially for those who already know it, please sing along.
A beautiful rendition of a great song… one that will stay with us through life…
Thanks. That sort of blowin in the wind optimism is rare today. But maybe it’s blowin in the wind.
…you mean, there are people who’ve never heard it?!!!
Great gift, Stephen!
Thank you my friend!
Thanks Marina. I usually do these songs from memory, and it’s interesting how well they’re ingrained.
That is one of the Dylan songs I do acoustically. I will think of you this Saturday when I am performing it!
Thanks. It IS a great song. I think Dylan himself doesn’t perform this song often. Good luck Saturday.
Thank you Bumba!!!!
Great tribute to a great song, Stephen ! How many years indeed. I always have loved this song from Bob. Thank you for bringing it back to life.
Wishing you a healthy and happy 2013.
groetjes,
Francina
A Happy New Year to you too, Francina. Glad you enjoyed the song. Groetjes,
Steve
I’m singing along! You can’t go wrong with this song. Love the Bumbaversion.
One of the things that’s always tickled me about Dylan’s version (the original, I guess) is the use of the word “Yessun.”
“Yessun how many years does it take ’till he knows….”
Yessun I left out a couple of yessuns I notice. Thanks for the comment and keep singin!
Thanks for the blast from the past!
